Fitch fought his potential abductors and by doing so he saved the life of his brother Abercrombie.
Unfortunately Fitch could not recover from the injuries he received from these cruel and heartless people and he succumbed. Fitch lost his battle for life on March 5, 2007 at 11:56pm at the University of Georgia.
Rest in Peace Dear Brave Fitch... For you we will continue to fight!!!

SIPHON CITY

Siphon City, a son of multiple Grade 1 winner Siphon who ran against the best of his generation, was retired after running at Calder Race Course in a $5,000 claiming race on June 28, 2009. The 7 year old won over $375,000 in his career including the Grade 2 Cornhusker Handicap.

Many devoted racing enthusiasts became concerned for Siphon City and his ability to continue racing. Barbi Moline had been following Siphon City for years and contacted Maggi Moss and Celia Fawkes to ask for their help in retiring the veteran. In an unexpected twist, another claim had been put in for Siphon City after his final race and trainer David Fawkes had to win the shake to ensure his safe retirement.

At the end of July, Siphon City arrived at Pure Thoughts Inc. Thoroughbred Rehabilitation and Placement Division. Siphon City is now relaxing at the farm and is in the rehabilitation process. He will begin re-training in two weeks and when ready, will be placed in his "forever home." As with most Thoroughbred race horses he has a great mind and he will make great riding horse. Although his racing career is over for Siphon City, his new life has just begun.

- SIPHON CITY -

HIS NEXT FINISH LINE IS RECOVERY

Read about his claiming here https://www.purethoughtshorserescue.com/ottbdivision/siphoncity.php

Day 1

From the beginning Siphon had poor feet.  He arrived to us with tender soles and no hoof wall to nail a shoe on.  He was kept barefoot with limited turnout with the goal being to grow hoof wall. His feet were wrapped with cotton, guaze, vetwrap and duct tape on more tender days to protect the hooves.

Thursday evening, Siphon was much more painful, was doing the "founder stance", leaning back with his front legs out in front of him.  He feet were put on ice.  We did this by putting empty saline IV bags on his feet, filled with ice and duct taped around the top.  The doctor came out and he put the horse on Banamine 10cc twice a day, 2 Bute twice as day, 20 Isoxaprine twice a day, and a antihistamine once a day. This was an emergency call not the vet we have working on Siphon now.
Conviently, Alex, a Master Farrier, was at the barn and was nice enough to look at the horse and give me some advice.  He told me to get a pair of thick blue stryofoam pads and tape the to the bottom of the hooves to make an impression.  Next, we were to take the pads off and cut the pad and inch behind the tip of the frog. After that we needed to replace the back half the blue pad and a thick black rubber pad on top of the blue and secure with Elaxicon to the hoof.  So, Jen and I drove off to the farrier supply store got the supplies. When we got back to the farm we had the whole team there.  Alan helped with cutting, shaping and securing the pads, Wendy handled Siphon and kept him happy and Jen documented the case.  Siphon got his evening drugs and was happy.

Day 2

The next morning, the wraps had slipped a little so they were removed and the feet were put on ice for a while that day.  Later on the pads and wraps were again attached to Siphons feet.  I called Dr. Boswell, who we have worked with on a previous laminitis,  to lead the care of Siphon.  He planned to come out Saturday afternoon.

Day 3

When Dr. Boswell arrived Siphon had his feet on ice so we discussed the history of the horse and the meds he is currently on.  First thing he did was feel the soles of the feet to confirm that we had a laminitic horse.  He was able to feel the tip of the navicular bone under the sole and Siphon was clearly painful. Siphon was clearly more painful on the left than the right. Dr.Boswell cleaned out around the frog with a hoof knife.  Then  applied a putty that would harden to the consistency of a soft super ball or a dental mold to the hoof from the frog back to the bulbs replace the black rubber pad on top of that then elastikon to secure it.
Siphon City has had so many injections throughout his life that he no longer had veins on his left hand side that can be used for injections.

Next, Dr. Boswell was concerned with the meds the horse was on and that his hind legs were stocked up. He told us that that amount of Bute and Banamine Siphon the previous vet prescribed could be very damaging to the liver, kidneys, and colon of the horse.  Blood was taken with the results available on Tuesday which is also the day the radiographs will be taken.  Dr. Boswell prescribed Equioxx and a weaning from bute and banamine. He also added more Isoxiprine to 35 twice daily, high doses of high grade biotin and Keretex Hoof Hardner as a topical. Gastro Guard for his gut.

Day 4
This morning Siphon was painful but the equioxx helped.  This Afternoon he was painful again on the left and I called the vet. The swelling in his legs was now normal. He had us remove he pads on the left, ice the foot for a few hours and replace the black pad without old the rubber mold, in case it was putting too much pressure on the foot, and secure it.  Dr. Boswell also asked him to get 2 grams of bute.  He seems comfortable right now.

Day 5
Siphon's xrays came back and the rotation was not as bad as the doctor had anticipated which is fantastic news because on Saturday it was looking very bleak.   Tomorrow, the vet is coming out and he will give his write up with the details so I will just share the basic rundown.

Siphon continues to be in pain but we are managing it with the bute and equioxx.  He remains positive of spirit and eats well. The rest of his meds remain the same with the continuation of the isoxaprine and ulcer meds.  His feet get iced and rewrapped with the rubber pads each day. We even did a hot epsom salts in case there was an abscess hiding somewhere. The x-rays show slight rotation of the navicular bone.  With the larger problem being the extremely thin soles.  We will be applying a non-permanent shoe that is wedge at the heal enough to try to encourage less use of the deep flexor tendon while at the same time keeping the pressure off the soles of the hooves. Then, later on as the hoof grows to a more permanent shoe.
