Yes that is what you sawThe babies have a Mama.. and this Mama has three little charges to watch over. It was such a perfect match. I had an idea so one day I put Dolly in there and even though I had been sure she was a broodmare it was apparent she did not like children and everytime she would shoo them away because they were either bugging her or she wanted to steal their food they would go running to the fence and to the paint mare, who when she saw them coming she quickly went over to the fence and was there standing with them and talking to them like a Mom would do..As if she was saying, "there, there it's ok." Then while I was watching I was thinking how chunky Dolly is getting and that extra food can't be good for her and then I looked over at the paint mare who was nurturing the babies over the fence and they were flocked to her and I was thinking how she still needs so much more weight ..... then FINALLY.. The lightbulb went on.. and I switched Dolly and the Paint Mare
Well the babies were so happy they just flocked her and would not leave her alone. She must have been a Mama before because she is wonderful at it. WHen one cries for her she comes right over and stands next to them as if in a nursing position. In the morning the babies go running to Mama's bucket because she gets fed first and she is so patient, she lets them each take one nibble out and then she nicely shoos them away to their own food. She never steals food from them and you should see it when they are all in a stall together.. It really has made a difference and next year with the NMF"s I might have a surrogate Mom in the babies area for them.. Here is a picture of them going to her bucket.. You can see her lagging behind.. Such a good girl, she was rescued out of New Holland
